(CAWA) and conduct any breeding in accordance with that association.   Papers must be discussed before the purchase of the puppy.

Sunset Kennels agrees to refund the full purchase price of the puppy if it dies in the first week after sale from a cause that is due to negligence on the part of S.K. in the raring of said puppy.  The purchaser will have to produce medical evidence from a Veterinarian at their expense.

Medical History

This Puppy has been Vaccinated and wormed as recommended by our Veterinarian.  The Purchaser will be given a vaccination certificate/card.   The vaccination card should be taken to your Veterinarian along with your puppy when the booster is due.  This vaccination card should be kept along with this document for the life of the puppy.   * WARNING *   This puppy is not covered properly for the diseases that it has been vaccinated against  for at least two weeks after the last injection.  # Ask your Veterinarian for advice and explanation #  The vaccination card should travel with the puppy whenever he leaves home for an event, boarding or a visit to the Vet.  This is your puppy’s most important document.

Repositioning

Sunset Kennels agrees to reposition this puppy at no expense to SK to a new home, if for any reason the new owner decides to quit the animal. Please do not dispose of this puppy via the council dog pound or animal haven.

Due Care

The new owner agrees to kennel this puppy in conditions that will shelter it from the elements, and protect it from harm. This also included maintaining proper parasite controls, providing clean fresh water and nourishing food. The new owner agrees to abide by the cruelty to animals act as governed by the RSPCA.

 Local Council

The new owner agrees to maintain a proper fence and gate system as required by local council regulations, to prevent escape.   You the new owner is aware that this puppy will have to be registered with the local council.

Technical information

Sunset Kennels has supplied various Veterinary pamphlets for your information. A quite read may help you to understand the reasons behind prevention of disease in your new puppy. Please ask your vet to explain anything you do not understand, as a professional is the only one qualified to do so. Sunset Kennels will help in any way that they can to make your new puppy the best family dog in the district.

Parasite control

This puppy was checked by a veterinarian before it was vaccinated by ~7 weeks.  It has been wormed as recommended by our Vet, until sold to you.  Sunset Kennels strongly recommends that you follow the advice of your Veterinarian in regards to parasite control for Gut Worms, Heartworm, and Fleas.

Feeding

Feeding should take place in a quite place away from children and adults that may offer a distraction.     If you are not home all day leave biscuits for the in between meal.

By the time your puppy is 11-12 months old he should be on one meal per day, and he should not be fat.  Use a small bowl for food so you do not over feed.  Gauge what your puppy eats in about 15-20 minutes.  After he has eaten take up the rest to stop grazing and to prevent attracting vermin.  If he has not eaten enough he will eat properly next meal.

Commercially available dog food is more economical to feed and is a better balanced meal for your puppy than table scraps.  See Sunset Kennels for economy hints.   The approximate adult dog ration is 120 grams of Pro Plan Biscuit.    Ask your Vet about Oral hygiene for your puppy.  Sunset Kennels prefer to use lamb neck bones but there are side effects.  Some biscuits achieve the same results, but can be fattening.

CLEAN FRESH WATER IN TWO OR MORE SHALLOW CONTAINERS, SHOULD ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE IN A SHELTERED AREA AWAY FROM THE SUN.

The First night

Your puppy should be confined to prevent loss and exposure from the elements.  A laundry is a good place but it can be cold so place a whole weekend paper under puppy's bed for insulation.  An old article of clothing that you have worn close to your skin is good bedding.  Spread paper on the floor to catch any droppings.  Remember to leave fresh water.  A small cardboard box is a good bed until your puppy can step onto a hammock bed.  Once the pup is put to bed for the night don't get up and comfort him if he cries for your attention as he would have won the first battle to get onto your bed.

Children

Children should be supervised when playing with your puppy or adult dog.  A puppy can be crushed very easily when playing with children that are running or riding toys.  Adult dogs may lash out if they are injured by a child.   Children should not be near feeding animals.

Jumping

Puppy should not be taught to jump.  They should not be allowed to jump from the lounge or bed until they are fully grown.  A good rule of thumb is not to allow the pup to jump from anything taller than itself. Teaching your puppy to jump obstacles will only encourage him to jump fences.  Prevent your puppy jumping from lounges, verandas, cars, utes and any other obstacle that he may be placed on.

Washing

Your puppy should only be washed when he is dirty/smelly or carrying a burden of  flees.  Sunset Kennels recommends Hydrobathing in a Pyrethrum based wash.  Alternative use a shower rose on one meter of garden hose to provide a good bathing system.  Use a pyrethrum based wash and warm water for best results and comfort for your puppy.  The most important part of washing your puppy is to ensure that you rinse him of thoroughly.  Dogs washed in a hydro bath solution should be allowed to drip dry if the weather allows.  Avoid water in the ears and soap in the eyes.   If the wash is very thick and creamy, dilute it first to avoid waste.  To keep the skin and coat in good condition brush your puppy with a slicker/card brush regularly.  This will also help keep down vermin.

Nails

Nails should be cut every 2 weeks.  See SK or your Vet for instructions and advice.  Don't forget to remove the hair under his feet.

Other Animal

Your new puppy should be protected from other animals, especially older dogs and cats.

TRAINING

Training Starts Now   (day one when you take your puppy home)

Puppy Pre School

Puppy Pre School (PPS) is  recommended by Sunset Kennels.  Your puppy and his handler will learn a lot about socialisation and where your puppy stands in the Canine/Human world.  PPS can be compared to pre school for children, and is a good grounding for obedience.  See your Vet for details.

Obedience

It is very important that your puppy starts life on the correct foot, or should I say correct paw.  Basic obedience is the first step that your puppy can take into this world, so that he can be expected to behave as a confident and obedient companion.

There are two basic types of Obedience schools that you can choose from.

Commercial     You pay $X for a pre set course conducted over an agreed period.  See your Vet for details.   S.K. recommends Amrex on 9455 6966.

Clubs                   Ring 455 1188 (CAWA Assoc) for the nearest club to your area.  The cost varies but is about $20-$30 per year.  You graduate each class at your and your puppy's own speed.

Be aware that you will have to do homework a night for either method to be successful.  Do not expect your puppy to improve if you are not persistently consistent.

Hitting

Hitting any dog does not get you anywhere.  In fact the physical contact is what the dog wants, and he will soon associate being naughty with social contact.  Ask your obedience trainer/breeder/vet for advice on how to discipline your puppy.  Suffice to say you have to discipline your puppy within seconds of his offence to make an impression.  When you get home is to late.

Males

Males will show aggression to other male dogs (Big or Small) if threatened, (eye to eye contact), or if there is a bitch in season in the vicinity.  Males will roam to find a bitch in season, as their scent travels some distance.   Bitchs will also roam for a mate.

Females

Females will come into season for the first time, anywhere between 7-12 mths of age, and then every 6 mths on average.  First signs of a heat are swelling of the vulva and then spotting blood from the vulva.  The bitch must be confined to prevent matings taking place.  Males and Bitches will scale large walls or tunnel under fencing to effect a mating.

Desexing

The best pet is a desexed pet.  Speak to your vet for the best time and the cost involved.  It is more expensive to have a bitch desexed during a heat or in whelp.  It is an old wives tale that you should breed a dog/bitch to get the best out of the animal.  Desexing an animal will ensure a more healthier life by preventing cancer and other diseases of the sex organs.  It is also not true that a desexed animal will get fat. It will only get fat if the owner overfeeding it and if it does not get enough exercise.  It is said that a desexed animal will require less food.  This may be true but it is best to monitor the physical shape of your puppy to ascertain his/her condition.  It is a simple matter to feed up or down depending on the dogs condition to rectify any weight problems.  When you are on a good ration stick to it.   Discuss the dogs condition on each visit to the Vet.   Don't be afraid to ask if fido has a weight problem and how to remedy it.

You second option is a pet travel crate, as used by the airlines.   Most dogs like these for a bed as they provide a draft free area to lay that is dark.   Just add bedding for warmth.   These crates are ideal for travelling, and to keep your JRT quite for short periods of time i.e. at night and while guests are present.

Never ever feed Beef to your Dog.

This includes Snacko,s , Raw hide chews or anything which comes from beef.

 Never cook meat or bones

Cooked bones splinter and do extreme damage to the dogs gut.  May require surgery to get it fixed.    Bones left in the sun start to cook so pick them up each morning.   They may have even been fowled by rodents and other vermin during the night also.

Chicken frames are obtained from Lennard's Chicken at most shopping centres.
