Home with puppy
Prepare Home. You should prepare the old homestead before you bring your new pup home. Check the fencing and gates for holes or loose pickets. Does the gate self close and does the latch work. Is the pool fence working, perhaps you will need to fix wire to the bottom of the pool fence to stop your pup from getting to the pool and drowning. More dogs drown in home pools than children and adults combined. Check the pup can't get under the gate.
Food. Have you consulted your breeder for a diet sheet for your pup. If not, ring your breeder for advice on what to purchase. Remember dogs eat dog food and people eat people food. Dogs fed on table scraps usually end up very fat and unhealthy. You should buy in enough food for a fortnight.
Feeding. A common comment from new puppy owners is that the pup is not eating. There may be two reasons for this. The first and hardest to cure is when the new owners expect the pup to consume heaps of food. The second is when the food is put down for the pup, there are to many distractions. Puppy should be fed whilst it is quiet, and he is on his lonesome. Put the food down for about half an hour and them remove it. If the pup has not eaten enough or not at all, he will make up for it next meal time. Never leave food about as it only attracts vermin. Vermin carry disease which may make puppy sick.
Maintenance. Be sure to put away money for your pups maintenance. He will have to be wormed and vaccinated a number of times before he is 4 months old.
Worming. Worming should take place at 2,4,6,8,12 weeks and 4,5,6 months and then every 3 months.
Heartworm. Heartworm medication is vital for all dogs in Australia. Consult your vet. Some medications can be given that cover both Heartworm and Intestinal worms as well as fleas.
Sleeping Quarters. You can spend big money on sleeping equipment for your pet. We recommend an airways crate, or a hammock bed. The airways crate is also good to train your pup in and ideal for traveling in the car.

These Airline crates are ideal for your Jack to snuggle into on cold nights. During the winter just place a blanket over the air holes in the top to make it warm. A blanket on the floor of the crate will make it comfy. Approx Au $65.
They are also good for transporting your Jack in the car safely.
First Night. The first night in the pups new home is probably the most important. The house should be prepared for the new pup. When it is time for the pup and family to retire for the night, the pup should be placed in a room with its bed, water, and paper on the floor, and left alone. The room should be at least warm for the pup. If the pup cries don't go to it. Try your hardest to ignore the pup until the morning. If you go to a crying pup it will know all it has to do to get your attention is cry out.
Service from Breeder. Your breeder should provide you with instructions on how to discipline the pup what to feed the pup, and advice about keeping it healthy and safe from harm.
Poisons. A lot of pups die from old baits that were intended for rats and mice. Snail pallets also kill a fair quantity of dogs of all ages. Ask you breeder for a list of poisonous plants that can be found in the garden. If it harmful to a toddler it will also harm your pup. Visiting relatives and friends can also be hazardous if they use these products.
Tradesmen. Unfortunately tradesmen are usually in a hurry and tend to prop open doors, and leave gates ajar. If you have a tradesman in for house maintenance or you are having a big shindig have a neighbor look after the pup or better still board your dog at a reputable kennel. Sunset Kennels of course.
