Many thanks to Gloria and Kate for showing our boy in New Zealand. Hunter will be home on the 30 May 01 to resume showing and stud work.
Boss Retires.
Our Boss has finally called it a day and retired from the Show Ring. Now 7 years young Boss is showing signs of old age. He still wants to go to the show but not participate. Boss has been a wonderful Show Dog. Probably the most outstanding Jack Russell in WA. He has won many awards including 4 Western Classics, WA's Tournament of Terriers, 2 BOB at the Perth Royal, and many Group and in Show awards. We at Sunset Kennels thank all the Judges that have been kind in there words of praise for the old dog & awarded him his challenge certificates and awards. Boss has enough accumulated points to apply for another award but why bother. We would also like to thank Gloria Geraghty of NZ for campaigning Boss to his NZ title.
The big news is that the Puppy Kennel block is finished and has excepted its new residents. Pearl and Kiwi the Border pups were the first to spend the night. The next night we installed Netty and Houly the Parson pups from Yasmin and Finn. The other 2 pens have Gypsy and Scully in residence awaiting their pups. The pens have an easterly aspect so they remain reasonably cool on the 30+ days. The Power and water can not go on until after Christmas so we have resorted to the system we used in the old kennel block when we first started out. We have a concerted effort in place to get the lawns back in shape over the next few weeks.
31/10/00 Big news. We are Grand Parents again with the birth of Jack Thomas Taylor, to Rob and Sharon. 6lbs 14ozs. Their other children are Ashley, Mathew, & Jessie-Lee.
An interesting article in the Victorian Jack Club Newsletter, Russelling Pages (Apr-May issue1999). See below. It appears that the Group 2 Breed lecturer has been telling the Trainee Judges to throw away the JRT Extended Breed Standard and the ANKC JRT Standard. What is the ANKC doing about these flagrant violations of the Rules. It only amplifies the call for regular checks on Judges. Exhibitors pay for an assessment of their stock, and the ANKC should ensure they get it. Official ANKC Standard www.ankc.aust.com/jackruss.html
Judges can obtain an extended breed standard from their local KC office.

Import or Not ?
To import or not, that is the question. Much is being said about the use of imported Jacks from England, in Australia. Should not the dog in Australia look the same as the dog being bred in other countries including England. All spannable, all predominately white, all active working terriers, all bred as close to the standard as possible. England is the true country of origin and the true country of development. For anyone to say different just does not make sense. To call the dog the Australian Jack Russell would be an insult to all the history of the dog. Next we will be adding Australia to all the dog breed names, just because some breeder thinks they contributed to its development. Just think Australian German Shepherd, Australian Puli, and Australian Doberman. Where next?
The country of origin, that being England is the only country that you can import Jacks from where they are not recognized by that countries Canine Control Body. The only difference being, the organization that signs the pedigree papers is a Breed club. Who better to know what a real Jack should look like, and pedigrees that go back hundreds of years in some cases. On recognition in Australia all that was needed was a 3 generation pedigree signed by a breed club. What's the difference? Jack Russell Terriers can be imported from several countries that recognize them, and are registered by their Canine Control. These dogs came from England, or their ancestors did.
Accusations that British breeders are only puppy farmers is also a load of crass rubbish. Some breeders own more dogs than others, and some breed more than others but that does not make them puppy farmers.
In Australia we have breeders that have published their own breed standard, leaving out sections and changing others to suite there own ends. Perhaps they are frustrated Corgi breeders. A good reason to bring in retraining or re-testing of a Judges abilities after a few years in the field.
For the official Breed Standard go to www.ankc.aust.com/jackruss.html
The dog has been registered by the JRTCA (Inc) since 1972, approximately. The ANKC recognized the dog in 1991. How people can believe they are responsible for developing the breed in this short time span is beyond me. They give no credit to the old terrier people that have used and breed this animal in England and many other European countries for literally 100's of years.
The imported Jack is being blamed for a predicted height increase in the future as the belief is that all imports are from Parson Stock. This is simply not true, as breeders in England strive to keep their dogs under the 12" limit that we all try to maintain. There are more important faults out there that should be looked at before height is considered. These include movement, back end faults in general ( cow hocks etc), to much colour, the eye shape and the big daddy of them all, span ability. There are many dogs in the show ring today that are just to heavy. Other faults that seem to be swept under the carpet are, blue eyes, pricked ears, luxating patella's, and very large heads.
Since we at Sunset have used imported lines all of the above faults have not appeared. Our pups are not oversize and above all they are not Corgi chested.
