Shocking Puppy Stories

The following stories are from conversations with people that have rang asking for advice.  No names are used to protect the innocent purchasers, but the so called breeders (Backyarders) should be reported to the RSPCA.

These stories are very strong reasons for you to consider purchasing  your Jack Russell from a ANKC Registered Breeder.   You then have comeback with the breeder via the ANKC or State K9 Body, even if your pup does not have papers.  You also have access to the Small Claims Tribunal.

Parvo Pup.    A lady rang asking to purchase a pup as her recently acquired Jack Pup had died.  I asked the question of what it had died from and the answer was Parvo.    I advised her not to get a pup for some time because the Parvo Virus can live in the soil for a considerable time.  She came back with the statement that the pup never got to her home.

The lady said she had purchased the pup from a Backyard Breeder in East Fremantle.  They decided  to have a picnic in the park on their way home.  After finishing up at the park they headed for home but realized the pup was not looking to flash, so they dropped into their vet for a consultation.  The vet diagnosed Parvo virus after a simple stool kit test.  The pup died later that night.

The lady tried to talk to the Backyard Breeder but only got the phone slammed in her ear.

My advise was to go to the small claims court for advise on recouping her money, and to notify the RSPCA.  The pup was never vaccinated.

Always get a written guarantee that the pup will be alive in 10 days time (the incubation time for Parvo) along with the vaccination certificate.

Old broken Leg.    A lady rang asking for advice on how to control her 9 month old Jack Russell.  I asked her if she had contacted the breeder for advice and was told that the backyard breeder was in Qld.  I then asked how the dog happened to be in WA.  She advised that she had purchased the dog from the backyard breeder when he was on holidays in WA and was living with friends/relatives in Willetton.   She had purchased the pup at 4 weeks and the pup was not vaccinated (not surprising), neither were the other siblings and for that matter the adults, as the breeder did not believe in it.  The pup was also crawling with flees and badly needed worming.

The story gets better.  For a special 1/2 price deal the lady could have had one of the other pups.  The backyard breeder had inadvertently ran over it and its leg was broken.  The backyard breeder did not want to spend any money to get the pup fixed by a Vet.

Unfortunately it was to late for the lady to contact the RSPCA but it serves as a lesson to those that are looking for a pup.   Always buy from an established Registered Breeder, and get some written guarantee of health along with the Vaccination certificate.
